Safety and Security for Olathe North
Dear Parents and Community,
I am writing this for the purpose of safety and security at Olathe North. I am requesting your help. Please sit down over the weekend and address these concerns with your student. Over the last several months we have had an increased concern in several areas and as an administration and staff we feel we need to deal with each of these concerns. These may seem like small issues, however when you are a building of 2,300 people in a confined space it can significantly impact the educational day and safety and security of our school.
Hoodies, Hats and Beanie Caps
We have been dealing with several students that consistently wear their hats or hoods of their sweat shirts up throughout the school day. What we notice is that when a student is requested to take their hoodie down or hat off, they do so, then when they turn the corner they put it right back up or on. This is a fashion trend and I understand that is how the students want to wear it. However, any type of headwear can block the view of a student’s face or appearance from the hundreds of cameras in our building. This is a major safety and security concern. If there were an emergency and administration or local authorities would need to use our surveillance cameras it would be difficult to identify students as victims, by-standers or witnesses. We will be dealing with these violations swiftly for the remainder of the school year. Please see the policy from the Olathe North Student Handbook listed below.
Dress or appearance that is likely to cause disruption of the educational process or create a health or safety concern will be considered inappropriate.
The following provides a guide for dress and appearance. School authorities do reserve the prerogative to counsel students regarding their manner of dress and grooming:
-Hats, caps, any headgear will not be worn in the school building during instructional time.
Student ID to enter Olathe North between 8:00am and 3:00pm.
We are averaging 15-25 students a day that do not have a picture id with them when they want to enter Olathe North between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm. This is new protocol for the 2017-18 school year due to the new camera/buzzer system. This is a major security risk and time commitment when the attendance secretaries are forced to look up pictures of every student that comes to the student entrance without a picture id. We constantly visit with our students that, due to safety and security, they must have either a driver’s license or a school id to enter the building. If this were a parent, community member, or visitor we would not allow them to enter without appropriate ID. We will be dealing with these violations swiftly for the remainder of the school year.
I.D. Cards must be on students at all times. Students will be charged $5.00 for each replacement.
Students Opening Locked Doors for Other Students at Olathe North between 8:00am and 3:00pm.
All doors at Olathe North are locked down promptly at 8:00am. It is the responsibility of all students to report to the 600/student entrance and for all visitors to report to the front office entrance if they want to enter the building after 8:00am. It is important that students do not push locked doors open to let anybody in to the building. This is a safety and security concern. Please direct the individual to the appropriate entrance so that they can show photo ID to enter the building. We will be dealing with these violations swiftly for the remainder of the school year.
Students standing around and or walking in large groups during Eagle Halftime.
Another concern is the grouping of students in the hallways during Eagle Halftime (EHT). When students are walking or standing in large groups in the hallways it can become a major concern. It becomes a blockage in the hallways and can deter flow for the students that are headed for academic support or lunch. When students tend to be in larger groups they are louder and a disturbance to the academics occurring in the nearby classrooms. We are also having a problem of students that are “Mall Walking” during EHT. They are walking through the halls in large groups for the entire 50 minutes. They are eating lunch while they are walking, they are stopping throughout the building and distracting other students, and they never find a specific location to sit down to eat lunch or work on assignments. I am certainly concerned with the students that are struggling academically and do not use this opportunity appropriately. We also are having a problem with trash throughout the hallways.
What are the consequences for a student who does not use Eagle Halftime appropriately?
If a student uses Eagle Halftime inappropriately (fails to report to assigned location, creates a disruption to others, leaves campus, etc.) he/she will be assigned to a mandatory study hall during Eagle Halftime, known as a “Sideline”. The privilege of Eagle Halftime may be suspended indefinitely if there are repeated incidents. The student will eat his/her lunch in the mandatory study hall and complete class assignments.
Students using E-Cigarettes or Vaping at Olathe North
We are seeing much more vaping or the use of e-cigarettes across the Olathe School District then we have in the past. This is not just an Olathe North concern. Obviously this is a safety concern for our student. Kids are willing to share their vapes with other students, in many occasions students do not know what they are inhaling. It could be a vanilla flavored nicotine to cannabis oil (THC which is the narcotic in marijuana). This is a safety concern for the health and well-being of our students. You truly do not know what is in the vape!! Our punishment is much more severe for vaping. If you are caught vaping it is a minimum of three days out of school suspension. You could also be ticketed by our School Resource Officer for tobacco consumption or arrested for drug consumption.
Students at Olathe North are expected to abide by the following guidelines:
-to refrain from the use or possession of cigarettes, e-cigarettes or other tobacco products on school grounds or at any school event.
-to refrain from possession, use, consumption, sale, or distribution of alcohol or restricted drugs on school premises (This includes any evidence of being under the influence of such substances. This applies during the school day as well as during school activities before or after school hours.)
