One to One Technology Update

11/10/2017

Olathe North Community,
Below are talking points that have been shared with me as we approach the opportunity to move 1 to 1 with laptops.  I wanted to share this information with you so that you are aware that we will not be handing out MacBook Aires in January as stated previously.  I appreciate that the district is working hard to ensure a successful launch of the one to one initiative at Olathe North and the other Olathe high schools.   At this time there has not been a date determined when the launch will occur.  I will keep you posted as information is shared with me.

  • The district’s 1:1 technology device deployment is currently on hold until critical assurances for success can be met.
  • Our goal is to ensure that critical assurances are being met at Olathe West before we initiate deployments at our other high schools.
  • We are specifically reviewing assurances in the following areas: wireless capacity, device performance, professional development, technology support and cost efficiencies.
  • While the original timeline for deployment has been delayed, the goal has always been to learn from the deployment at Olathe West to allow for smooth and successful deployments at the other high schools.
  • A successful 1:1 deployment at the high schools remains a priority, and we will continue to provide updates as they are available regarding assurances and timelines.

What critical assurances need to be met? Is this delay a month delay or a 6 month or longer delay? I’d just like some more details so that I can know if I need to make other plans for technology for my children. Thank you.

I'm confused how is it that the olathe middle schools seem to have gotten their system up and running from the start of the school year? Seems that there is a break down in the system and excuses are being made to justify the high not getting the necessary tools needed I find this to be unacceptable as I said before Johnson County is one of the richest counties in the United States there's no excuse for them to be unable to provide these laptops to your children they should have been provided from day one would no problem no I love us have the ability to give our children iPhones as the school seems to think we can do it's not their responsibility to have internet access another phones at school to be able to do their homework

Can you please reply to my comments and questions? I’m just curious if you know how long the delay is going to be?

Rodney, Sorry for the delay in my response. I have not been given specifics on the timeline. At this time the district wants to assure that OW is running flawlessly and all the problems that have occurred are remedied. The district is currently testing infrastructure at the other four high schools to ensure that wifi, broadband width, and connectivity will not be a problem. I hope that this is a quick fix, however as we all know when it comes to technology a quick fix is rare. I hope we are up and running by spring break. Again I do not have a specific timeline for the fix. Please feel free to respond to this blog or jhermanon@olatheschools.org with any further questions.

Thank you Mr. Herman. I am bummed. I know my kids are looking forward to it and being stuck in limbo halfway between paper and digital is difficult. I hope they can solve the problems soon. Feel free to post any news back here or create a new blog post to keep us posted. Thank you.

Are there any updates on the 1-1 release?

Just FYI...I work at a MS in the district and we are having multiple problems with our 1-1 evices! You are better off not having them at this point, it’s been a major headache!!
