City of Olathe Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Construction Project Could Effect Students That Do Not Park On Campus.
As you may or may not be aware, the City has recently begun a sidewalk construction project, adding sidewalks along streets that currently do not have them in neighborhoods around Olathe’s schools. As part of this project, sidewalk is being added along the west side of Curtis Street between Prairie Street and Whitney Street west of Olathe North High School. Sidewalk will also be added along the north side of Whitney Street between Curtis Street and Nelson Road north of the high school. This construction is set to begin next Monday, March 12th and will continue until the beginning of May. The Contractor will start on Curtis street then move to Whitney Street.
Construction hours for this project are limited to 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., however, the contractor has been advised that it may be necessary to reduce construction operations during peak traffic in the mornings and afternoons.
When construction begins on Curtis Street, street parking will be restricted to the east side of the street to allow space for the Contractor to complete construction of the sidewalks on the west side. Myself and the Contractor will do our best to contact anyone whose car is parked on the west side, but if we cannot reach anyone and the vehicles are impeding construction progress, the vehicles may be moved via tow truck to the other side of the street, to a cross street, etc. to allow construction to continue. The City will bear the cost of any towed vehicles, but the vehicle owners may have to ask for assistance in finding where their vehicle was moved.
We are requesting that students not park on Curtis Street once construction begins there. We will be replacing driveways on the west side of the street and these homeowners will have to park along the east side of the street during construction. Because of this, we would like to reserve the east side of the street for the homeowners on Curtis Street to use. Notices will be provided to all of the homeowners along Curtis Street notifying them of this, however I need your assistance in informing the students that may currently park in these locations.
