Olathe North High School Full In-person Mitigation Plan

lathe North High School Parents and Students, 
As we plan to welcome students back in-person, full time, we are committed to making our schools as safe as possible as we work through this transition.  
It’s important to know that modifications have been made to the HVAC systems to bring in more fresh air and filters are changed more frequently than industry standard for indoor air quality. Hand sanitizer is placed throughout the buildings. Students and staff will continue to be encouraged to wash their hands regularly.  Buildings are sprayed at minimum weekly with a Clorox 360 cleaning machine to help disinfect surfaces. 
Masks will continue to be mandatory for students and staff. We must work together to keep everyone safe. Please remind your children about the importance of wearing masks properly. 
Below are questions that you might have as we go back full time on March 1, 2021.  
 
When does my student come to school? 
All students will report to school from 7:45am –3:00 p.m. each day. 
 
What classes are they attending each day? 
Students will attend A Block classes (odd hours) one day. They will attend B Block classes 
(even hours) the following day. Classes will rotate A/B (odd/even) each day. Students will 
attend school five days a week.  Please see attached calendar of A/B (odd/even) March-May. 
  
Where can I find bus Information?   
**TBA** An email will be coming out from the district with detailed information about bus transportation.  You can also go to www.jasonhermanon.weebly.com and go to my newsletter for more information as it becomes available.  
  
What time should my non-bus rider student arrive at school? 
Students should not arrive at school prior to 7:30am. We cannot have students congregating in large groups before school. Students should arrive between 7:30am and 7:45am. They will report immediately to their first class of that day. ****Requesting non-bus riders to get here as close to 7:45am as possible.    
 
What time will Busses arrive at Olathe North? 
Busses will arrive between 7:15 and 7:30. Any bus rider that arrives before 7:30am will report to the commons/gymnasium. All students will report to their first class at 7:35am. 
  
Where should I drop off and pick up my student? 
We are requesting all students to be dropped off and picked up on the North side of the building located in the rear or east side of the building. With busses loading students and exiting the premises, the front lot will not be available for PM pick-up until 3:10PM. It is the expectation that the building be completely cleared of students by 3:10PM unless they are under the direct supervision of a staff member.    
 
What doors should students enter in?  
7:15 the South Common Doors and the Athletic Event entrance.  (Primarily for early arriving bus riders) 
7:30-7:45am: South commons, attendance/blue room, 700, 800, south 900 doors will be open.  All students who arrive after 7:45am must report to the attendance/Blue room doors. 
  
What will dismissal look like? 
3pm - students will be released for the day. Students will need to immediately leave the building whether being picked up by a parent, riding a bus, driving themselves, or walking.  All students should be out of the building by 3:10pm, unless the student is participating in a supervised activity with an adult 
   
What does my student do when they exit the building? 
Go directly to their vehicle or find their ride.  Please keep masks on until you have entered your vehicle.  No congregating in the parking lot, in front of the school, or in doorways.   
 
What are the mitigation plans for lunch?  
  • All seating is socially distanced at 6 feet.   
  • We will create 5 separate lunches, that will on average be 255 students.   
  • All seating will be located from the Culinary Hallway all the way to the 100 ramp. 
  • All lunches will be grab-n-go and must be eaten in the designated areas. 
  • Custodians and Administrators will clean the lunch area between each lunch. 
  • We will have spray bottles and paper towels in stations for students that would prefer to clean their lunch space before eating.   
  • Please see attached pictures of seating arrangements. 

Can my student eat in their car?  
Students will not be allowed to go to their car to eat lunch.  We will have appropriate seating for students.  They will have multiple locations to sit in for lunch.  

​Are they allowed to leave the building for lunch?

Students are not allowed to leave the building without being called out by a parent.  Remember we only have 25 minute lunches now.      

​How will my student know what lunch they will have?   
Students are assigned lunch by the teacher they have for 4th hour on even days and 5th hour on odd days.  This is communicated to students today and tomorrow. 

What if my senior has 5th lunch and does not have a 6th or 7th hour?  
If your senior has 5th lunch and does not have a 6th or 7th hour, they are welcome to leave the building. We have scheduled most seniors in 5th lunch to allow this and to have less students in the commons area.  

Will there be assigned parking for seniors? 
For these first two weeks of full in-person we are going to see how parking is affected.  We feel there is plenty of parking for students that purchased parking passes.  If we need to assign spots we will make that determination for 4th quarter.  

Will there be an opportunity for my student to have a snack if they are assigned last lunch at 12:55?
Please contact the nurse or your students alpha administrator.  We will deal with this need on a case by case basis. 

Where can students eat in the building? 
Students are permitted to eat in the designated lunch areas.  No eating anywhere else in the building.   

Are you taking temperatures at school?   
No, we are requesting that all students take their temperature at home before arriving to school.  
 
Will there be breakfast?  
A “grab-and-go" style breakfast will be available for all students to access.  All students eating breakfast will eat in the designated breakfast area.  Non-bus riders that want breakfast must arrive before 7:40 to obtain a breakfast that must be eaten in the commons. 
 
Are lunches still free?  
Lunch is free for every student for the remainder of the year.  Please refer to district website for more information.   

Can my student have snacks when they are in classrooms?  
NO!!! No food in any classroom, NO EXCEPTIONS! 

Can my student bring a Backpack to school? 
Yes: We are not checking out lockers this year. 

Can my student bring a water bottle?    
Yes: Our shareable water fountains are unavailable due to mitigation protocol; our refillable water bottle fountains are still operational.    

Does my student have to wear a mask during school? 
Yes: 100% of the time they are in the building they must have a mask on.  Masks must be worn over their mouth and nose. 
Exceptions: Eating lunch in the designated areas and when they take a drink of water.   

What mitigation factors are we doing in classrooms?  
Staff will promote social distancing to the maximum extent possible.  Therefore, if you have 28 in a classroom and the maximum you can socially distance is 2ft that is appropriate if the students stay masked the entire time. 
All classes will have hand sanitizer available. 
Desks will be sprayed and wiped down between each class. 
Students could be asked to wipe their desk down with a paper towel as they enter a room. 

Can my student bring disinfecting wipes to school with them? 
Yes, as a matter of fact I recommend that all students carry disinfecting wipes with them throughout the day. 

​What mitigations have been put in place during passing period?  (We will stay status quo to many of the mitigation plans from Hybrid) 
Students will not be able to stop and visit during passing periods.   
Students can refill water bottles or use restrooms. 
Students will move directly to their next class. 
Students will stay to the right in hallways. 
See attached map for one-way hallways and how students will move during passing period.  
See attached signage that will pe posted around the building. 
  
What happens if a student refuses to wear a mask? 
A student refusing to wear a mask over the mouth and nose will be redirected by a staff member one time.  If they violate the mask rule a second time they will be sent to their alpha administrator and a parent contact and contract will be put in place.  The student will be sent home immediately.  The contract will state that if the student egregiously breaks the masking rule again, they will be transferred to the remote setting.   (This goes for all mitigating expectations)

Lunch Set-Up Photos

ON Community, 
I apologize for leaving the photos out of the email of mitigation pertaining to lunch.  Below is a gallery of photos that shows seating and how the students will be able to socially distance during lunch.  
Photo #1 is an example of what a cleaning station will look like.  We will mitigate the entire seating area between each lunch.  However, students will have the opportunity to clean their own area before they sit down to eat if they so choose.

Photo #2 is an individual eating areas near our fish tanks in the South commons.  If a student wants an individual spot they are welcome to sit here.  We can seat approximately 20. 

Photo #3 & #4 is seating in the Culinary hallway.  We are able to socially distance approximately 20 students in this hallway each lunch. 

​Photo #5 is seating in the 700 hallway.  We can seat 14 students socially distanced.  

Photo #6 & #7 is seating in our upper commons.  We will sit 2 or 3 students per table.  We can seat 84 students 

​Photo #8 & #9 are examples of what the students see when they arrive at the table.  We have an ON sticker where the student is to sit to ensure they are socially distanced.  

Photo #10, #11, & #12 is our lower commons and main lunch space.  We can seat 4 students at each cluster of tables.  We can seat 90 students.

Me disculpo por dejar las fotos fuera del correo electrónico de mitigación en relación con el almuerzo.  A continuación, se muestra una galería de fotos que muestra los asientos y cómo los estudiantes serán capaces de distancia social durante el almuerzo.

Las fotos #6 y #7 corresponden a los asientos en nuestra sala superior. Se sentarán 2 o 3 estudiantes por mesa.

​ Las fotos #8 y #9 son ejemplos de lo que el estudiante ve cuando llega a la mesa.  Tenemos una etiqueta ON donde el estudiante debe sentarse para asegurarse de que está socialmente distanciado. 
Las fotos #10, #11 y #12 corresponden a nuestra zona común inferior y al espacio principal para el almuerzo.  Podemos sentar a 4 estudiantes en cada grupo de mesas. 

La foto nº 13 es un ejemplo de lo que ven los alumnos cuando llegan a la mesa.  Tenemos una pegatina ON donde el estudiante debe sentarse para asegurarse de que está socialmente distanciado.

​As students at Olathe North High School, all students have the opportunity to participate in the Presidential Volunteer Service Award Program.  For full details on the program’s eligibility requirements and guidelines, please see the attached document.
 
Students wishing to be recognized for their volunteerism should complete the Google form available at this link: https://forms.gle/gWEHtguN9bMS8zWm7
 
Acceptable service dates are April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.  All data must be entered by March 31, 2021.  No extensions of time to enter data will be granted this year.

Kansas State Assessments for Olathe Public Schools

Dear District Families,
During the spring of the 2019-20 academic year, the Kansas Department of Education made the decision to not administer state assessments, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  This spring, with schools being open and the majority of students learning in person, KSDE has made the decision to return to administering state assessments.  This decision to move forward with testing is a positive one, embraced by the Olathe district.  As we move towards the end of this school year, it is important our district has evidence of academic learning, as well as evidence of academic needs moving into the 2021-22 academic year. 
KSDE has shared the expectation with school districts that ALL students take state assessments, even those students who have chosen to learn Remotely.  For Olathe students who have chosen In-Person learning, this will feel very normal and state assessments will be scheduled during the normal school day, as in the past.  For our students learning Remotely, the design of the state assessments requires that students take the assessments in person at school. Currently, each building is working on a plan to safely assess Remote students and they will reach out to families of Remote students in the next few weeks with those plans.  The Olathe Public Schools expects all students to take the state assessments and provide the district and families with much-needed information to make the best decisions possible for 2021-22.
Once building administrators have sent state testing details to their communities, please feel free to contact your school’s principal (or building test coordinator) with additional questions.

National Honors Society is collecting books for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau

​The National Honors Society is collecting books for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau. They are need of young adult and children's books, but all types are welcome.  Our drive will be held from February 22 through March 5. The books will be collected during advisory or directly dropped off in Mrs. Henry's classroom #716. For remote students, there will be containers in the main lobby. Let's support this district-wide drive that has been organized by Olathe North senior NHS members.

Results of the KC NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) Competition

Congratulations to Kloe Wagner getting first place in both Classical Vocal and Musical Theatre. Kloe is a singer in both Chorale and Northwinds and is a private voice student of Mrs. Alyssa Toepfer, the Olathe North Assistant Choral Director.  Also congratulations to Paola Ramirez, Olathe North graduate (class of 2017?) getting 2nd place in the college Classical Vocal division.

Free Junior ACT Transportation Information

Dear Olathe Public Schools Families,


On February 23, 2021, ACT testing will take place in each high school building during the morning session.  All current AM bus routes will run as scheduled and will make all stops.  Bus transportation for students who normally attend the afternoon session and remote students will be provided at select elementary buildings throughout the district.  Please see the attached document for stop times and locations – buses will meet students at the front door of the elementary school.


All Special Services busing will remain as scheduled.
