Internet Access Support Program

12/30/2020

Olathe Public Schools parents,

The Olathe Public Schools has partnered with KC Digital Drive, a local non-profit, to provide internet access support for families in need in the district. Students and families who qualify for free or reduced lunch, can apply to have their household internet bill paid for six months through the Internet Access Support Program (IASP). The program is funded by the Federal CARES Act through the Johnson County government. It is administered by KC Digital Drive.

To apply you need to complete a short online form. As part of that application you will need to a copy of your latest internet bill (if you currently have service and want to keep that service).   If you’ve not yet applied for free/reduced status with the district and would like to apply, you can do so at this link: https://www.olatheschools.org/domain/2909.

If you don’t currently have internet service or want to change providers, complete the form and IASP will help you get service established. This link will take you to the form: www.kcconnect.me/olatheschools

We encourage those families that are eligible to take advantage of this program.

Sincerely,

Olathe Public Schools

Olathe North Theatre at Tri-State Virtual Thespian Festival

12/17/2020

Olathe North Theatre had 13 students attend the Tri-State Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma virtual State Thespian Festival over four weekends from October to December.   The students represented Olathe North well, by being respectful festival attendees and also performed well in Thespy’s/Individual Events, Acting Competitions, and Auditions.  If you see or know these students, please congratulate them on a job well done.

- Sara Holscher  (senior) served as a State Thespian Officer. In this position she helped run aspects of the festival and helped teach two leadership and two theatre advocacy workshops.

- Chase Ellis (junior) started the application process to be a State Thespian Officer which will be decided in January.

Eva Smith (Freshman) achieved a superior in her Dance Challenge performance. It is a new category this year and this makes her the first Olathe North Student to achieve a superior in this category.

6 of the attendees participated in Individual Events.  This is a competitive acting and technical theatre event sponsored by Thespians.  Students are ranked superior, excellent, good and fair on a rubric provided by the Educational Theatre Association. Participants can compete in many different acting and technical theatre areas.

3 Individual Events (4 students) receiving a Superior (which qualifies them for the international festival in June):
Sara Holscher (Senior)- Monologue Performance (Her first superior at state)
Carly Welter (Junior)- Set Design (Her first superior at state)
Chase Ellis and Luke Martin (Juniors) – Duet Acting (Their first superior at state)

2 Individual Events (2 students) received an Excellent:
Emma Steenhard (Senior) – Monologue Performance
Ally Iandolo (Junior)- Monologue Performance

- Sara Holscher (Senior) was one of only ten students to receive a Kansas Thespian Scholarship.  Her scholarship is in theatrical performance and involvement.  She is one of four Olathe students to receive scholarships this year.

- This year our thespian troupe also received an “Honored Troupe” award meaning that our troupe actively participates in theatre outreach, bringing theatre to the community, theatre productions, and theatre participation. This awards recognizes the work that the Olathe North Theatre group has done in the last year including work done during the pandemic.

- Improv Team of Chase Ellis, Carly Welter, Abby Strella (Juniors), Mikayla Pelletier (freshman), Sara Holscher (senior) won their first round in the improv challenge.  The challenge put them against teams from all three states.

-Olathe North had 3 seniors audition for colleges and all received callbacks. They were:
Sara Holscher, Camille Korte and Emma Steenhard

It was a very successful few weeks for the theatre department, the thespian troupe, and it’s students.  Please congratulate them as you see them.

Thanks

Update to District Learning Mode for Secondary Schools

12/15/2020

Dear Olathe Public Schools families and staff,
As you know, we have committed to regularly review data as we work through the challenges that come from this pandemic. Using the current data from the county and our district metrics, the district is in the Yellow Zone of the district gating criteria. Secondary students will return to in-person school in a hybrid format when school resumes from semester break on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Elementary students will remain in full-time, in-person learning. This learning environment change applies to those who chose in-person learning for second semester at the secondary level.
You can review the district’s gating criteria on the district COVID Dashboard at https://www.olatheschools.org/Page/10754.
The hybrid format for secondary students is the same as they followed from Oct. 19 through Nov. 24.
  • Middle school students will follow an ABAB schedule: Week One, Group A students will attend on-site Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Week Two, they will attend on-site Tuesday and Thursday. Group B will attend on-site Tuesday and Thursday in Week One and Monday, Wednesday, Friday in Week Two. They will continue alternating as long as the hybrid mode is in effect.
  • High school students will attend school on-site for half days, five days a week. Group A will attend on-site in the mornings and Group B will attend on-site in the afternoon.
  • Middle and high school students with temporary learning plans will resume those schedules.
  • Building Principals will follow up with their communities with any school-specific details.
  • Elementary and middle school remote students will follow their current schedules.
  • High school remote students will follow the same schedule they followed from Oct. 19 through Nov. 24.
Providing the best quality educational experiences for our students, while balancing the safety and health of our students, staff, and families, is a priority. We are committed to doing everything in our power to bring secondary students back in a hybrid format on Jan. 6, but in order to do so safely, we will continue to monitor community numbers over semester break. Please do your part to help us by continuing to wear a mask, wash your hands, stay home when you are sick, keep your children home when they are sick and practice social distancing. We need a community effort to keep our schools in session, our students and staff safe and learning together.
Thank you for your support of the Olathe Public Schools.

Detailed information about Winter Activities and Athletics

12/10/2020

With so much change to our current athletic/event landscape I felt that it was important to reach out with some important updates today.  The two big topics of the moment are defining and getting out information about tickets to our events.  Equally important, is getting information out to our parents/students/community about our streaming capabilities and the process to gain access to these events via the NFHS platform.

Ticketing Information:
  • The KSHSAA voted yesterday to begin allowing up to 2 parents of every participant involved in our events entry from December 10th- January 28th.
    • The Olathe School district has created a one page document with guidelines for our events. (see attached)
    • For most events we will be able to honor 2 parents at each venue for every participant
      • The exceptions to this rule swimming events and bowling events due to capacity concerns.
    • Please note that the 2 attendees at the game must be parents and/or guardians of the student participating
      • Siblings, grandparents, neighbors, friends are not allowed in per the guidance of the KSHSAA mandate.
    • We also must realize that we always follow the guidelines of the host school.  In some cases this may dictate that we would not be able to attend games hosted on the road.  Currently, Olathe is only allowing spectators for our home teams (including visiting schools from Olathe).
    • The process to obtain entry through the end of December will reside through a pass gate list created prior to the event.  This list would include up to 2 names per participant and the listed names must be parents/guardians of the student participant.
    • Beginning in January, we will start using the hometown ticket system to send out ticket codes for parent access.  More detail will be sent out before the end of the semester.

Streaming Information:
  • It is our intention to stream ALL home events (at every level freshmen to Varsity) here at Olathe North.
    • Please see the attached document for a message from the Olathe School District
    • When starting up your account with the NFHS platform, make sure to choose Olathe North as your school of choice.
    • Once on that platform you should be given access to all of our home events in Olathe for free in the month of December.
      • After December you will need to sign up for a monthly package or an annual package to have access to these games.
    • Once you have an account on the NFHS you will be directed to Olathe North events but you will still have access to see any local or national games that are being hosted on the same site.
    • All KSHSAA sponsored post-season events are also hosted through the NFHS platform and will be a part of any subscription you purchase.
    • We are in the process of getting our cameras up and going for our first home event this Friday.
      • We are excited to announce that we have secured play-by-play analysts (staff members) that will help bring the game to life for those who will be watching from home.
  • When playing on the road we will obtain streaming links from sister schools and share those through the twitter handle: @ADPriceON

As always, please reach out via email: jpriceon@olatheschools.org or phone (913)780.7146 with any questions.  We appreciate your support of Eagle Nation during these unique moments in time.

Go Eagles!  -Josh

Dear Parents,
The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors altered the plans regarding parents attending athletic contests. The motion that was passed by the KSHSAA Board of Directors states, “Effective Thursday, December 10 through January 28, 2021, interscholastic activities will allow for attendance of up to two parents/guardians per participant(s) family as allowed by local board of education or health department restrictions”.

What does this mean for Olathe? The attached document outlines what our guidelines are in lieu of this recent change. Thoroughly read the entire document. Please note that masks are required during the duration of the event along with social distancing. Our athletic director, coaches, sponsors, or directors will be in communication with you regarding how to attend ball games. The provision for parents to attend is for winter sports, cheer, dance, and pep band if your child is participating at the game you are wanting to attend. Though we will not be allowing fans from other schools to attend for right now, we will allow parents to attend when Olathe is competing against Olathe.

If you have questions please don’t hesitate in contacting our athletic or activity director. I look forward to seeing you at our winter sports activities.

Sincerely,
Jason Herman
Olathe North High School

To ensure the safety of all, the following protocols are in place for all Olathe Public Schools events during the winter season.  To attend an event participants, staff, and fans will: 1. Be symptom free of Covid-19 2. Conduct a personal temperature check prior to arriving to event (temp must be below 100 degrees) 3. Arrive with hands sanitized 4. Wear a mask upon arrival, throughout the event, and when leaving 5. Social distance by 6’ (families may sit closer together) 6. Not be allowed to interact with teams or be on fields/courts 7. Exit facility immediately following the event 8. Follow additional mitigation protocols that are sport/activity specific 9. Understand that guidelines are subject to change based upon local/state recommendations

Tickets/Attendance ✓ Members of winter activities (basketball, wrestling, swimming, diving, dance, cheer, pep band) will have access to 2 parent tickets when participating in an event. ✓ The bowling centers are allowing parents of seniors to attend but are planning to provide live scoring. ✓ Electronic tickets are the only way to gain entrance to a winter activity beginning in January. Details about Hometown Ticketing is available through building administration. ✓ Schools will livestream winter sports that take place in their building via NFHS Network. Details on how to watch a livestream was provided by building administration.  ✓ Those without tickets can watch events at no cost during the month of December via the NFHS Network. Beginning January 1, there is a subscription fee. The fee is $11/month which is much cheaper than what 2 tickets would cost for a mom and dad to attend for a month.  ✓ Special passes (Staff ID’s, Senior Citizen, SFL, & Activity) will not be accepted until restrictions are lifted. ✓ Students are not allowed to attend. ✓ All spectators will require a paper or electronic ticket to enter a wrestling, basketball, or swim event beginning in January 2021. ✓ Visiting team parents are not allowed to attend games at this juncture. However, when Olathe competes against Olathe it is permissible.  ✓ Concession stands will not be available. ✓ Personal beverages are permitted but wear mask when not drinking ✓ USD 233 reserves the right to not issue a ticket to anyone not willing to follow these guidelines.  Staff members have the authority to enforce mitigation protocols.

Important Update on Quarantine Recommendations

12/8/2020

Olathe Parents,
The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) has updated its quarantine recommendations for individuals who are close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases. These recommendations follow the recently announced CDC quarantine protocol.
For those individuals identified as a close contact, the new recommendations include:
  • An individual may return to school/work on Day 11 (Day of exposure is Day 0) of the 14-day quarantine if no symptoms have occurred throughout the quarantine.
  • An individual may return to school/work on Day 8 of the 14-day quarantine if they have had no symptoms AND they received a negative PCR test (not rapid antigen) performed on or after Day 5 of the quarantine with the day of exposure counting as Day 0.  If they have a PCR test done on Day 5, receive the results within 24 hours (Day 6), they still may not return until Day 8.  If they develop symptoms between the test on Day 5 and Day 8, they may not return and are counted as presumed positive. Students will need to make sure they mask properly to prevent exposure of others in their class if they develop symptoms late in the incubation period and after they have returned to school. This means that the mask must cover both nose and mouth. Proper masking is one of the cornerstones of our mitigating measures and is particularly important for students returning early after exposure.
  • The incubation period of the virus remains 14 days.  If a student returns using the shortened quarantine guidelines and develops symptoms within the 14-day quarantine period, the student should stay home, call the school to report the symptoms and absence, and go for testing for COVID-19 or call their doctor.  If the student develops symptom(s) at school, the nurse will notify the parents to pick up the student.
  • If your child is currently in quarantine and you believe that she/he qualifies for an early return to school under the updated guidance, contact your school nurse. New quarantines occurring the week of December 7 will automatically be considered in light of the new quarantine guidelines.
As always, please be sure to wear a mask, practice social distancing and proper handwashing and please stay home and keep your child home if sick. We appreciate your support and assistance in this area.

Sincerely,
Olathe Public Schools Administration

ACT Prep Winter Opportunity

12/7/2020

If you are taking the ACT in February, including the free ACT offered to Juniors, please consider doing some prep before you take the test.  Research shows that preparing for the test can raise your composite score 3 points and sometimes more!  Remember-the more practice you do the more comfortable you will be on test day.
ACT Prep Inc. is hosting a virtual prep class for Olathe North students January 4th and 5th from 8:30-11:30 both days.  They are offering $20 off the class (class would be $75 normally $95) if you register by December 21st.  This is a great opportunity since school does not start until January 6th.
Register at:
http://actprep.info/olathenorth

We are hoping to host a free ACT prep class to North students in February, but due to COVID restrictions we are waiting to schedule.  More information to come after break.

ACT Testing Information
Who should take the ACT?
Any student planning on attending a 4-year university.  Many schools have waived the ACT scores for the class of 2021 however, it is still required for many scholarships at universities.  It is unclear at this time, what will be decided for the class of 2022.
When should I start taking the ACT?
We recommend starting by the end of Sophomore year. The June test is a great test to get started in the process.  For an additional $20 students can get a copy of the test booklet and their answers about a month after they take the test.  This is a great learning tool to see areas where you need to make improvements. The test information release is offered for the April, June, and December tests.
Most students will take the ACT 3 times.  We also recommend being finished by the end of the summer before Senior year in taking the test.  The ACT is offered in June, July, September, October, December, and April each year.
What should you do to get ready for the test?
Practice!  Research has shown the more you look at the test and prepare the better you will do.  We also recommend taking a prep test.
How does a student register for the ACT?
Students will need to register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org.  They will need to set up an account to register and pay for an exam.  Students on free/reduced lunches can talk to a counselor and use an ACT waiver for 2 free exams.  This account will be where students will check their testing location and confirm their registration.
