Selective Service System Registration

12/7/2018

The Selective Service System is reminding all students that under current law all male US citizens between 18–25 years of age, born after January 1, 1960 are required to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. In addition, non-US citizen men between the ages of 18 and 25 (inclusive) living in the United States must register.

A young man who fails to register with Selective Service may be ineligible for opportunities that may be important to his future. He must register to be eligible for federal student financial aid, state-funded student financial aid in many states, most federal employment, some state employment, security clearance for contractors, job training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (formerly known as the Workforce Investment Act), and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

Ideally we would like to have one or more of your staff members designated as your school’s Selective Service System “Registrar”.  The Registrar would be a point of contact that we can email flyers and information to about Registration and that your students can go to if they need assistance with the Selective Service System registration.  We will gladly provide all the information needed to assist your staff member or the student.

The requirements are that the staff member be over the age of 18, a U.S. citizen and that they have registered for the Selective Service System (if required to do so). Those staff members will be asked to fill out one of our Registrar’s applications so that they can be officially appointed by our Agency Director and their contact information maintained in our database.

Using current technology young men can register by using their smartphones. As questions may arise during the registration process, our goal is to have someone at the school students can go to with questions. I am not providing the website address in this email as I do not want this email to be perceived as a phishing attempt.

The Selective Service System is merely trying to make sure the word gets out to as many young men as possible so they are aware of the current law and do not miss out on benefits that are afforded to them by registering.

Parent Information Regarding the Panorama Social Emotional Learning Students Survey

12/3/2018

We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district.  To learn more about student experiences and needs, we will be asking for your child’s feedback via an online survey they will complete at school.  Over 1,000 schools and districts use Panorama for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to grow and measure their students’ social and emotional skills and supports.
Social emotional learning captures the mindsets, skills, attitudes, and feelings that help students succeed in school, career, and life. For the Olathe Public Schools, Panorama for Social-Emotional Learning measures student growth on SEL topics and provides teachers valuable data on which SEL topics students need direct instruction in.  In addition, Panorama for Social-Emotional Learning gives educators resources to use in their classrooms as part of their regular classroom instruction.
This year, part of the online enrollment process asked for parent permission to allow students to complete the Panorama Survey as our district’s SEL survey tool.  This thirty-minute survey will be given three times a year to measure students’ perception of their skills in the areas of grit, emotional regulation, social awareness, teacher-student relationships, anxiety, sense of belonging, and school safety.    This data will be reviewed at the district and classroom level to determine areas of strength and areas where more instruction is needed and/or skills practiced. Student individual data will be available to both students and parents.
Winter Testing will Occur 12/6/18-12/13/18
Please contact any building administrator or counselor with any additional questions or to obtain a copy of the survey questions.

Sincerely,
Jason Herman

Former Olathe North Student Inspires Others to Give Back. Donors Raise over $30,000 to Establish Scholarship in Her Name

12/3/2018

Click To Hear Azalia's Story
Picture
Last Spring Azalia Morales, a recent graduate of the Olathe Advanced Technical Center (OATC),  contacted the Foundation for assistance in providing $1,500 in scholarships to students graduating from the OATC. Azalia had saved the money from her three jobs while attending KCK Community College because she wanted to give back to those who supported her in school.

“Azalia is an amazing young woman,” said Cindy VonFeldt, OPSF Executive Director. “She was so committed to giving back to these students who were following her and to honor the teachers that meant so much to her success that she just wanted to make a difference.”

District parents Mike and Julie Hirons, who were in attendance the night Azalia’s scholarships were awarded, were so inspired by her story that they decided they too should contribute to OATC scholarships. This put things in motion to establish the Azalia Morales Career and Technical Education Fund.

OPSF Annual Autumn Breakfast attendees had the opportunity to hear Azalia’s story and contribute to the scholarship fund. Their contributions helped raise over $30,000, ensuring funds will be available indefinitely into the future.
