  • Pens with black or dark blue ink for completing areas on the exam booklet covers and for free-response questions in most exams.
  • A calculator with the necessary capabilities if you’re taking an AP Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Statistics Exam.  Visit www.collegeboard.com/apstudents to learn more about the calculator policy for each of these exams, and for a list of authorized calculators.
  • A ruler or straightedge if you’re taking an AP Physics Exam.
You should not bring the following to the exam:
  • Cellular phones, smart phones, pagers, MP3 players, or personal digital assistants (PDAs) WATCHES of any kind, clocks will be large and visible from all areas of the testing rooms. Leave these items at home or locked in your vehicle
  • Books, compasses, colored pencils, correction fluid, dictionaries, highlighters, or notes.
  • Rulers and straightedges (except as noted above).
  • Ear plugs.
  • Scratch paper (notes can be made on portions of the exam booklets).
  • Computers (except as noted for students with disabilities), or calculators (except as noted above).
  • Portable listening or recording devices (even with headphones) or photographic equipment.
  • Food or drink
  • Clothing with subject-related information
You are required to arrive at the testing site no later than 15 minutes prior to your exam: 7:45 a.m. for the morning administration; 11:45 a.m. for the afternoon administration.  Students may not be dismissed until an exam has officially ended.  Do not ask to leave early if you finish before the end of the test as your request will be denied.  If you play a sport or have a job, it will be your responsibility to inform your coach or employer of your AP obligation and arrangements should be made accordingly.  Please clear all AP absences with your coach or sponsor.  If an exam starts at noon, it is not scheduled to be done until 4 PM.  The AP exams are approximately 4 hours in length.

Students WILL NOT be permitted to start a test late and no testing refunds will be given to a student who is late.

Students who do not wish to take their exam may request in writing a refund of $67 after the test is administered.  Refunds will be processed by Total Registration. Refunds must be requested by 5/5/18.

Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the testing sites.  There is ample parking close to all sites.  Students will be given 45 minutes of travel time to their test site or to return to OE.  Parents may pick up their students after an exam but may not wait in the exam area for their student. We will communicate with school Attendance to let them know which exams you are taking. If you do not return to school after a morning exam or go to school before an afternoon exam, your parents need to call attendance to excuse you.
Students who miss classes for an AP exam are expected to make up all work missed in a timely manner.  It is suggested that you contact your teacher soon to arrange for work prior to exam day.

Get a good night’s rest before your test, and eat a nutritious breakfast.  You are allowed to bring a snack and beverage for your 10-minute break.  However, eating and drinking is prohibited while you are taking an exam.  It is advisable to bring a sweater or light jacket in case the room temperature is below your comfort level.

You are required to abide by the policies of both the College Board and Olathe East High School during the exam period.  Any misconduct will be reported and could jeopardize your AP Exam grade.  If you decide not to take an exam, please inform me as soon as possible prior to the test administration.
Be sure to review the Bulletin for Students and Parents.  If you have any additional concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Good luck!                                                                             AP Coordinator   Tammie Milke

2018-19 Annual Bus Registration Information

4/23/2018

Dear Olathe Public Schools parents,

This is a friendly reminder for all students who plan to ride a general education bus in 2018-19. Annual bus registration is required for all K-12 students who plan to ride the General Education bus. Open registration is May 1 through July 1. Students must be registered by July 1. Free transportation is currently provided to the following students:
·       Students who live 2.5 miles or more from school;
·       21st Century Program students who attend a program outside of their normal home school boundaries;
·       English Language Learner (ELL) students who attend a school outside of their normal school boundaries to receive ELL instructional service.
Bus transportation may be available on a pay basis for students who live less than 2.5 miles from school IF there is an existing route in the area. Pay ride fees from the previous school year should have been paid and the account should be in good standing. Students living less than 2.5 miles from school who qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program may be eligible to receive transportation at no cost or a reduced cost IF there is an existing route in the area. Bus service is provided on a first-come, first-serve, space-available basis.
It will not be necessary to register students who will be riding on a special education bus, or preschool bus. Additionally, it is not necessary to register students who will be attending an ELL program outside of their normal home school boundary. Transportation for these students is arranged by their assigned building.
Pay riders may receive a discount of up to 25% if they register and pay no later than July 1. July 1 is a strict deadline. Students who register after July 1 will not be guaranteed transportation before September 1.
Late registration may result in an increased walk distance to the bus stop or placement on a wait list. Please register no later than July 1.
For more information on transportation services as well as the registration process, please visit the district website at: www.olatheschools.com/transportation.
Questions - please contact Carrie Nicol at olatheschoolbus@firstgroup.com or 913-782-1050, or Valeria Mitchell, para español, 913-782-1050 Ext. 221.

Safety and Security for Olathe North  Please visit with your student about these concerns

4/6/2018

Safety and Security for Olathe North

Dear Parents and Community,
I am writing this for the purpose of safety and security at Olathe North.  I am requesting your help.  Please sit down over the weekend and address these concerns with your student.  Over the last several months we have had an increased concern in several areas and as an administration and staff we feel we need to deal with each of these concerns. These may seem like small issues, however when you are a building of 2,300 people in a confined space it can significantly impact the educational day and safety and security of our school.
  1. Hoodies (Hooded Sweatshirts), Hats and Beanie Caps
  2. Not having student id’s when they arrive to ON after 8:00am/opening locked doors for fellow students between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm.
  3. Students standing around and walking in large groups during Eagle Halftime.
  4. Students using e-cigarettes or vaping at Olathe North
These four areas of concern will be dealt with swiftly over the next seven weeks.  With the exception of vaping, we will be assigning sideline, lunch time/Eagle halftime detentions, for these violations.  Monday we will be communicating this to all students first – fourth hour in every class.  This will be considered the students warning.  The administration will communicate to parents and guardians via email or phone call for all violations and consequences.

Hoodies, Hats and Beanie Caps
We have been dealing with several students that consistently wear their hats or hoods of their sweat shirts up throughout the school day.  What we notice is that when a student is requested to take their hoodie down or hat off, they do so, then when they turn the corner they put it right back up or on.  This is a fashion trend and I understand that is how the students want to wear it.  However, any type of headwear can block the view of a student’s face or appearance from the hundreds of cameras in our building.  This is a major safety and security concern.  If there were an emergency and administration or local authorities would need to use our surveillance cameras it would be difficult to identify students as victims, by-standers or witnesses.  We will be dealing with these violations swiftly for the remainder of the school year.  Please see the policy from the Olathe North Student Handbook listed below.
Appearance/Apparel Policy

Dress or appearance that is likely to cause disruption of the educational process or create a health or safety concern will be considered inappropriate.
The following provides a guide for dress and appearance. School authorities do reserve the prerogative to counsel students regarding their manner of dress and grooming:
-Hats, caps, any headgear will not be worn in the school building during instructional time.

Student ID to enter Olathe North between 8:00am and 3:00pm.

We are averaging 15-25 students a day that do not have a picture id with them when they want to enter Olathe North between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm.  This is new protocol for the 2017-18 school year due to the new camera/buzzer system.  This is a major security risk and time commitment when the attendance secretaries are forced to look up pictures of every student that comes to the student entrance without a picture id.  We constantly visit with our students that, due to safety and security, they must have either a driver’s license or a school id to enter the building.  If this were a parent, community member, or visitor we would not allow them to enter without appropriate ID.  We will be dealing with these violations swiftly for the remainder of the school year.

I.D. Cards must be on students at all times. Students will be charged $5.00 for each replacement.

Students Opening Locked Doors for Other Students at Olathe North between 8:00am and 3:00pm.

All doors at Olathe North are locked down promptly at 8:00am.  It is the responsibility of all students to report to the 600/student entrance and for all visitors to report to the front office entrance if they want to enter the building after 8:00am.  It is important that students do not push locked doors open to let anybody in to the building.  This is a safety and security concern.  Please direct the individual to the appropriate entrance so that they can show photo ID to enter the building.  We will be dealing with these violations swiftly for the remainder of the school year.

Students standing around and or walking in large groups during Eagle Halftime.

Another concern is the grouping of students in the hallways during Eagle Halftime (EHT).  When students are walking or standing in large groups in the hallways it can become a major concern.  It becomes a blockage in the hallways and can deter flow for the students that are headed for academic support or lunch.  When students tend to be in larger groups they are louder and a disturbance to the academics occurring in the nearby classrooms.  We are also having a problem of students that are “Mall Walking” during EHT.  They are walking through the halls in large groups for the entire 50 minutes.  They are eating lunch while they are walking, they are stopping throughout the building and distracting other students, and they never find a specific location to sit down to eat lunch or work on assignments.  I am certainly concerned with the students that are struggling academically and do not use this opportunity appropriately.  We also are having a problem with trash throughout the hallways.
What are the consequences for a student who does not use Eagle Halftime appropriately?
If a student uses Eagle Halftime inappropriately (fails to report to assigned location, creates a disruption to others, leaves campus, etc.) he/she will be assigned to a mandatory study hall during Eagle Halftime, known as a “Sideline”. The privilege of Eagle Halftime may be suspended indefinitely if there are repeated incidents. The student will eat his/her lunch in the mandatory study hall and complete class assignments.

Students using E-Cigarettes or Vaping at Olathe North

We are seeing much more vaping or the use of e-cigarettes across the Olathe School District then we have in the past.  This is not just an Olathe North concern.  Obviously this is a safety concern for our student.  Kids are willing to share their vapes with other students, in many occasions students do not know what they are inhaling.  It could be a vanilla flavored nicotine to cannabis oil (THC which is the narcotic in marijuana). This is a safety concern for the health and well-being of our students.  You truly do not know what is in the vape!!  Our punishment is much more severe for vaping.  If you are caught vaping it is a minimum of three days out of school suspension.  You could also be ticketed by our School Resource Officer for tobacco consumption or arrested for drug consumption.

Specific Expectations
Students at Olathe North are expected to abide by the following guidelines:
-to refrain from the use or possession of cigarettes, e-cigarettes or other tobacco products on school grounds or at any school event.
-to refrain from possession, use, consumption, sale, or distribution of alcohol or restricted drugs on school premises (This includes any evidence of being under the influence of such substances. This applies during the school day as well as during school activities before or after school hours.)

Thank you for reviewing this document and understanding that safety and security for the staff and students at Olathe North High School is the administration’s number one priority.  If you are aware of anything that you would like to report to Olathe North please feel free to contact an administrator at any time.  Also please download the new Olathe Public Schools mobile app.  This is an outstanding way to communicate anonymously if you have a concern you want to share with the administration at Olathe North.

Sincerely,
Jason Herman
Principal
Olathe North High School
