Teen Forum is a place where Teens gather together to discuss Hot Topic issues that are going on in the community and in the schools. Please consider volunteering your time to attend Teen Forum to give your opinions, thoughts, ideas, and possible solutions to problems that you are tired of! Topics like bullying, vaping, fighting, and teen suicide make for great discussion points at Teen Forum, and your voice matters. The Olathe Police Department will be there, but will not be a part of any of the discussions – they are there to answer questions from teens like you. All discussions are led by teen leaders – you just need to be there to share your thoughts. Can you give up some of your time to share your concerns with our city leaders? Teen Forum is scheduled for May 4th from 6pm-8pm at the Fire Administration Building on Old 56 Hwy. To sign up, you can contact your building principal. (The QR code on the flyer is the sign up sheet.) If you get questions, feel free to send them my way or to Major Bragg at JBragg@olatheks.org ![]()

Dear Olathe Families,
As we mentioned last week, the Kansas Department of Education has announced that the current remote or hybrid learning option will not be allowed next school year. This means that our students will return to a fully in-person learning format for the next school year. However, we know that for some families, learning virtually is better for their child. Beginning with the 2021-22 school year, Olathe Public Schools will be giving families the opportunity to apply for the district’s newest, progressive option for online learning – Olathe Virtual School (OVS). The application to apply for OVS is open now and can be found at www.olatheschools.org/virtual. The school will have limited enrollment and applications must be filled out between April 1-16. Who can apply to enroll for the Olathe Virtual School? All K-12 students within the Olathe School District boundaries are eligible to complete an application for OVS. Enrollment will be limited. Should interest exceed availability, a lottery system would be used. The application window will be open from April 1-16 and can be found at www.olatheschools.org/virtual. How do I know if Virtual Learning is a good fit for my student? Ideal OVS students will have the following characteristics and skills: Self motivation, independent learner, computer savvy, effective time manager, written communication skills, personally committed to growth, along with an availability of a strong support system during the school day. If your student did not thrive in this year’s remote learning environment, OVS may not be a good fit for your student. We recognize that these qualities tend to look different based on age and grade level. Please submit any questions you have about OVS to this form: https://forms.gle/wYeRxNuLX4x87h1y7. These questions will be addressed during the two Virtual OVS Parent Information Nights: scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 8 and Thursday, April 15. More information on the Parent Information Nights can be found at www.olatheschools.org/virtual. How is the Virtual School different from the remote learning that took place this year? Remote learning was a response to the COVID pandemic. It attempted to replicate the in-person experience by sharing staff, schedules and resources that were all designed for in-person learning. OVS has been developed because the district recognized that some students thrived in or need a virtual learning environment and there was a long-term need. OVS will be an independent school within the Olathe School District, with its own Olathe staff, curriculum, resources and schedules adapted for the virtual learner. Will the curriculum be different than in-person schools? OVS will offer prioritized grade-level and standards-aligned instruction, with an additional emphasis on social-emotional learning. Students will have access to a variety of opportunities and classes; however, we are unable to offer specialized courses such as AP classes, orchestra, band and choir. KSHSAA opportunities will be unavailable as well. High school students interested in participating in a 21st Century Academy or OATC should not apply for OVS. See attached for more information about schedules. What if my student changes their mind about learning virtually? Will they be able to transfer to in-person learning at their home school? We ask that any family that applies and is accepted into OVS make a year-long commitment. Please read over all the information carefully and discuss with your student if OVS is the right fit for your family. Olathe Virtual School sounds like a great option for my family. How do I apply? The application and OVS website can be found at www.olatheschools.org/virtual. Applications will be open from April 1-16. Families will be notified the following week if they have been selected for enrollment. If it is medically necessary for your student to enroll in Virtual Learning, you will need to upload a current note from your child’s medical provider as part of the enrollment process. We look forward to working with our students and families in the Olathe Virtual School. As a reminder, please submit questions you have about OVS to this form: https://forms.gle/wYeRxNuLX4x87h1y7. Sincerely, TJ Ulmer, Director of Blended Learning Ryne Huff, Coordinator of Virtual Learning

![]() March 26, 2021 ~ Finding a way to help others is rewarding. Learning that your efforts far surpass your goal is amazing. That’s what Tasmin Sangha, a National Honor Society co-president at Olathe North High School, was feeling about a book drive she organized for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau. What started as a plan to collect 500 new or gently used children’s or young adults’ books for the bureau turned into a massive collection of nearly 4,000 titles. Sangha and her fellow National Honor Society members at Olathe North were in a Zoom meeting with adviser Amy Henry in December when the chapter talked about planning a service project that could involve students outside of their own group. “I brought up the idea for a book drive to help the Johnson County Christmas Bureau Holiday Shop for 2021,” Henry said. “During our brainstorming Tasmin has the idea of reaching out to all of the Olathe middle and high school schools’ service-oriented clubs.” Not intimidated by the daunting task of contacting 14 other schools to propose her plan, Sangha said “the most important thing is communication. I reached out to each middle school KAY club sponsor and high school National Honor Society and service club sponsor to gauge their interest. Fortunately, all the responses were positive and from there I figured out the logistics of the entire book drive.” The project involved the National Honor Society groups from Olathe North, Northwest and South, as well as the Olathe West High School National Honor Society and Owl Service Club, and the Mission Trail Middle School KAY club. In a two-week period in late February and early March, the groups reported their collection totals to Sangha. “After seeing West’s success (more than 650 books), I am very excited to see the amount of books we collect,” Sangha said during the collection period. “We easily beat our goal of 500 books, which is amazing!” By the time JCCB Books Chair Nancy Thompson visited each participating school to pick up their collection, the total rose to 3,879 books. “The books department of the bureau relies on drives to gather the books we distribute,” Thompson explained. “You should be extremely proud of your students showing community action and leadership. These books will make a difference in the learning and enjoyment of children in need.” In a normal school year, the Olathe North NHS would have been happy helping the Christmas Bureau by itself, but in this remarkable year, one leader wanted to take it further. “I wanted to expand it in order to help more people,” Sangha said. “I love being able to see the success we’ve had. It’s amazing to see the response from the community and to help more people than we would have originally.” “I really like it when I’m able to mentor my student leaders behind the scenes,” Henry said. “Tasmin has a natural connection to wanting to make our community a better place. It was her own personal perseverance that made this project thrive in so many ways that it will continue to build literacy for people throughout Johnson County.” This entry was posted in News by Marlene Colgan. 4th Q Reminder Video for Students3/25/2021 This is a video I created and shared with students during advisory on Thursday. It refers to office hours, e-hall pass, dress code, bells & tardies and the parking lot. It was a reminder for our staff and students as we returned to school for 4th quarter. I would appreciate if you could review the video and discuss with your student. If you have any questions about any of the topics please let me know.
I have also attached the map that I discuss in the video about the parking lot in the morning. https://olatheschoolsorg-my.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/jhermanon_olatheschools_org/ES5KtmNQHltNmAMl3arKorwBuum9rWfDyXn9B-UD9Cf8kg?e=tbqwFo

Two of the great traditions we have here at Olathe North are the Academic & Military Signing Ceremony and Student Speakers at Graduation.
The Academic & Military Signing Ceremony is an opportunity to honor those Seniors who will be receiving scholarships for college or a trade school based upon their academic performance here at Olathe North, who have gained admission to selective admission colleges or universities (i.e. Ivy League, Stanford, Northwestern, etc.), or who have chosen to enlist and serve in one of the branches of our armed forces. This year’s ceremony will be on Thursday, April 29th starting at 9:30 a.m. This year, tryouts for Commencement Speakers will be on April 21, 2021 via Zoom starting at 3:15 p.m. Full details and procedures can be found in the attached power point. It would be great to see as many Seniors as possible participate in one or both of these events.
