Eagle Flight Crew Application Deadline Extended

3/29/2019

This year we implemented Eagle Flight Crew, which is a student leadership class that focuses on improving school pride.  We have done a lot to promote events and activities, plan assemblies, and are currently working on improvement projects throughout Olathe North.

This class is offered by application only, however for the 2019-2020 school year this is open to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.  We are looking for students who show leadership traits, are excited to be involved, and want to play a role in building ON spirit.  (They do not have to be super outgoing or loud.)  We would like to have a variety of students, as getting voices from various clubs, sports and activities helps us better relate to the student population at Olathe North.  If you have any students in mind, send them my way!  (we are currently looking for more MALES in the building, as we have had ZERO male applicants for next year!)

The original application deadline was March 20th, but due to Mrs. Eick's absence before Spring Break, we are still accepting applications.  (Interviews will begin next week.)  Please encourage students to visit Mrs Eick if interested.  Click the file at the top of the page for the application.

Attendance Information

3/27/2019

Parents/Guardians,

A friendly reminder, if your student is absent from school, it is imperative that you call to excuse the absence. Any absences that are not excused will be subject to administrative action.  Please remember that you can excuse  your students attendance via email, voicemail, or phone call.  Please see below for your best option.

1) 913-780-7845.  If the attendance ladies are on another call you will be directed to the voicemail.  Voicemail is checked consistently throughout the day.

2)  If you cannot remember the phone number call the main school line at 913-780-7140 and dial #1 when the voice prompt states, "Press #1 for attendance"

3) onattendance@olatheschools.org is the email address to report absences.  In my opinion this is the best way to report absences.  There is a hard copy record for both the parent and the school.

4) All of these options can be found at http://www.olatheschools.org/Page/8592 on the Olathe North website.  Below is what our web page on attendance looks like.

Report An Absence
  • Attendance is a very vital aspect of your student's success in high school!
In case of an absence, parents/guardians are asked to call the attendance office on or before the date of absence.
    Email Attendance

    Attendance Line: 913-780-7845
Please leave a voice message. Messages are checked from 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

The following may be recognized as excused absences but must be reported to the attendance office by 3:30 p.m. of the day following the absence.
    • Personal illness
    • Serious illness or death of a member of the family or close friend
    • Obligatory religious observances of the students’ own faith
    • Verified physician or dentist appointments
    • Court appearances
    • Emergency situations requiring immediate action
    • An absence which has been requested in writing and approved in advance by the building administration

    Tardies
    • Students are given a one-minute warning bell to arrive to class on time.
    • Any student not arriving to class on time must report to one of two tardy tables.
    • The student will be given a pass to class (three per quarter) and assigned a consequence after their third tardy.
    • Teacher may assign their own consequences for the first three tardies.

    Unexcused Absences
    • Students and parents will be notified of any unexcused absences via email.
    • Students will be given 23 hours to clean up any attendance issues by way of speaking with teachers and/or having parents call in to report sick days or doctors’ appointments.
      • A preferred method to avoid extra work by staff for students is to have parents call in any excused absences prior to the student missing school.
    • Students who have unexcused absences will be given consequences beginning with a one hour detention, which if not served would escalate to a Thursday School, which if not served would escalate to Out of School Suspension.
    • This protocol will follow in line with the consequences of not taking care of excessive tardies by serving the initial one hour detention.

Para Appreciation Week

3/25/2019

March 25, 2019 ~ With the district’s Para Appreciation Week being March 25-29, we wanted to take time to share information about all the wonderful work that is done across the district by our classified paras. Paras throughout the district serve in a wide range of environments with a broad array of duties and responsibilities. The vast locations where our staff serve include early childhood classrooms, resource rooms, ED resource rooms, CBR classrooms, Autism classrooms, AWE & Prairie Learning Center, Claire Learning Center, Mill Creek Campus, and in our wide variety of programs for 18-21 year old students.
Olathe paras work on the front lines providing so many different services including academic support, social-emotional support, keeping students safe and healthy, and serving as role models and mentors to students. Many of our staff also assist students in the community with employment skills and daily living functions.
Each individual is truly vital to our ability to provide the best special education services to our Olathe students as we prepare them for their future! We are incredibly grateful for everything they provide to our students and special education teachers and staff. Please join us in thanking all our para-professionals for their dedication, commitment, and hard work.

3/20/2019

Olathe Youth Relay for Life is April 5th-6th.  The event is hosted by Olathe North StuCo, but is open to all Olathe Schools.  You can play a role in this event in few ways:
  1.       Come Support!  The event is open to the public from 6pm-10pm on Friday 4/5.  Stop in and take a lap around the building, support a team by purchasing from their booth, or just show up and recognize their efforts in this event.  You can also make a donation using the following link: @- ONHS Donations
  2.       Know a survivor?  Please send their name to reickon@olatheschools.org.  We host a survivor dinner before the event and would like to formally invite them to join us!  This is completely free for survivors and their caregivers- it is a way for us to recognize their fight and honor them.
3)      Luminaria bags- Luminaria bags are paper bags that can be purchased to honor or remember a life touched by cancer that is lit in a ceremony on the night of the event. You can purchase these bags online @- ONHS Luminaria Donations

Snow Day Minutes Update

3/20/2019

Parents,

I wanted to share with you an update to the plan for making up the additional lost student contact hours from the Feb. 27 snow day.  To make up these additional hours, we have decided that the April 12th Professional Development (PD) day will be switched to a full student contact day at the high school level.  By doing this, we will meet the state required hours for grades 9-12.  In working with the Kansas State Department of Education and our Board of Education, we formally changed the April 12th PD day to be a snow day “make up” date, which allows the district to receive some forgiveness hours in addition to the extra high school student contact time that day. With the April 12th change, and the additional forgiveness hours from the state, we will be able to reverse the May 22nd finals day back to a half day.  Below are all the schedule changes that impact our high school students for the remainder of the year:

·         At the high school level only, the Monday, March 18th Professional Development day was changed to a full day of   school for students in grades 9-12.
·         The Friday, April 12th Professional Development day will change to a full day of school for students in grades 9-12.   Elementary and middle school will not have school this day and Professional Development will be held for staff at   those grade levels.
·         High school added 10 minutes to the beginning of the school day by starting the day at 7:50 a.m. each day of the   week for all of 4th quarter.
·         There will no longer be a late start on Thursdays during 4th quarter.  Classes will begin at 7:50 a.m.
·         Wednesday, May 22 (the second day of finals for grades 9-11) will go back to being a half day for high school   students.
·         High school buses will run on the same schedule as they have all year.

Again, these changes will only impact high school students.  Elementary and middle school will remain with their current schedules for the remainder of the school year.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Jason Herman
Principal

Olathe North Student Achieves Perfect ACT Score

3/8/2019

Picture
OLATHE ~ Arjun Garapaty, a sophomore at Olathe North High School, has earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students taking the ACT earn a top score.
“The Olathe North Community is so proud of Arjun and his amazing accomplishment,” Olathe North Principal Jason Herman said. “His academic efforts have paid off at the highest level. He is an example of how the Olathe School District prepares students K-12.”
He is involved in soccer, DECA, science bowl, scholars bowl, debate, forensics, student council, French National Honor Society and Distinguished Scholars.
